The problem that most people have when choosing colors for their home is choosing colors.  They don’t know what color to paint the walls.  They don’t know what fabric to buy.  They don’t know what color to choose for the flooring.  Choosing upholstery is an even bigger dilemma.  To solve this puzzle, you should choose the 60-30-10 rule. 

The 60-30-10 rule originated with the designing of business suits to select fabric colors and patterns.  When designing a home, the 60-30-10 rule is a great tool to use.  Basically the one color in the room will used for 60% of the design elements.  Another color in the room will be used for 30%, making it the secondary color in the room.  The final color should be used for 10% of the rooms design elements. 

The only other thing you need to remember when utilizing the 60-30-10 rule of choosing colors is that the colors you choose should be monochromatic or analogous colors (colors next to each other on the color wheel) if you want a warm relaxing affect.  If you want a dramatic effect in your home, you should use complementary colors (which are found on opposite sides of the color wheel).
